BROADVIEW HTS, OH JULY 14 — 2024 – The international non-profit organization U4U (Uniting For Ukrainian) Kids will be sending 18 children and teens to Northeast Ohio for a three-week respite from Russia’s horrific war in Ukraine. These aren’t ordinary children: All 18 have lost one or both parents in the war, victims of Russia’s aggression.

Cleveland is the fifth city in the U.S. to host the U4U Kids program.  Members of Slavic Full Gospel Church volunteered to serve as host families, providing food, shelter, fun activities and –- most of all hope — a respite from the war.

“Our purpose is to rescue and provide a safe haven for war orphans affected by Russia’s war, to those who have lost their home and families to the violence and unrest,” says Diyana Gabyak, the family coordinator from SFGC for U4U Kids. “We’re taking a big part in the lives in these children. We want to help them renew from the war. We want to show them love, and the love of Jesus, and to heal from all this horror of war.”

Deacon Roman Skalsky of SFGC points out that the host families for these 18 children are also paying for the airfare and travel expenses to bring the children from Ukraine to the United States, and back again. 

“This is another project in which we are involved. We’re trying to do everything (we can) to help Ukraine…This time we’re having a group of kids who … are orphans,” he says. “We have never experienced what it would be like to lose a young father in war. There are thousands and thousand of kids like this in Ukraine. A lot of tears and a lot of pain for mothers who have lost their husbands and fathers.”

The visiting Ukrainian children will also undergo a therapeutic rehabilitation program at SFGC. A special program, developed with a psychologist from Pennsylvania, is designed to help the children recover some from the PTSD they have experienced due to the war. “Peaceful skies” is one phrase which Americans and American-Ukrainians hear frequently from refugees who come to the U.S., as skies in Ukraine these days are filled with Russian bomber planes, missiles and drone attacks.

Alla Trokhimenko, activities coordinator for U4U Kids, explains that the 18 children will also have bonding experiences with their host families while enjoying a variety of recreational and cultural activities while in the Cleveland area. 

“The first week they will spend time with their families…and decompress from the horrific war. They will see families’ love and protection,” she says. “The second week we will have different excursions, including to a Guardians baseball game and to Case Western Reserve University, and for pool and park activities.”

BROADVIEW HTS, ОГАЙО, 14 ЛИПНЯ 2024 РОКУ – Міжнародна некомерційна організація U4U (Uniting For Ukrainian) Kids відправить 18 дітей і підлітків до північно-східного штату Огайо на три тижні перепочинку після жахливої ​​війни Росії в Україні. Це не звичайні діти: усі 18 втратили одного або обох батьків на війні, жертви російської агресії.

«Наша мета — врятувати та надати безпечний притулок сиротам війни, які постраждали від російської війни, тим, хто втратив дім і сім’ю через насильство та заворушення», — каже Діяна Габ’як, сімейний координатор від SFGC для U4U Kids. «Ми беремо велику участь у житті цих дітей. Ми хочемо допомогти їм відновитися від війни. Ми хочемо показати їм любов і любов Ісуса, і зцілити від усього цього жаху війни».

Приїжджі українські діти також пройдуть програму терапевтичної реабілітації в СФЗК. Спеціальна програма, розроблена психологом із Пенсільванії, покликана допомогти дітям трохи відновити посттравматичний стресовий розлад, який вони пережили під час війни. 
«Мирне небо» — це фраза, яку американці та американо-українці часто чують від біженців, які прибувають до США, оскільки небо в Україні сьогодні заповнене російськими бомбардувальниками, ракетами та атаками безпілотників.

Алла Трохименко, координатор заходів U4U Kids, пояснює, що 18 дітей також матимуть досвід спілкування зі своїми приймаючими родинами, насолоджуючись різноманітними розважальними та культурними заходами під час перебування в районі Клівленда. 

«Перший тиждень вони проведуть час зі своїми родинами… і розслабляться від жахливої ​​війни. Вони побачать любов і захист сімей», – каже вона. «На другому тижні у нас будуть різні екскурсії, включно з бейсбольним матчем «Вартових» і в Університет Кейс Вестерн Резерв, а також для розваг у басейні та парку».

Діти U4U також сподіваються поділитися історією про те, що відбувається в Україні, під час зустрічей з обраними офіційними особами у північно-східному Огайо під час їхнього перебування тут.
