Stories coming this month

CUYAHOGA FALLS – We are aiming for shorter but more engaging features this month for eyeoncleveland.com. Unless something unexpected happens, there will be only three stories to share.

First, Eyeoncleveland.com will have Part II in our series of stories about an important non-profit ministry serving people living in poverty as well as refugees and immigrants on Cleveland’s West Side. The ministry is Building Hope in the City, and it has recently opened 14 new multi-family homes in a neighborhood in Cleveland that hasn’t seen a new housing development in more than 60 years.

We will have details for you later this week. What makes Building Hope so remarkable is that the non-profit is continuously striving to become more self-supporting. It raises nearly $2 million a year through social enterprises (see chart below) which help fund its many programs and services. Look for the story.

These are pie charts of 2024 income and expenses for Building Hope in the City.

The 24th anniversary of September 11, the deadliest terror attack ever on America, will be next week. Soon, eyeoncleveland.com will launch a series of stories about the impact of the war on terror. This series will culminate around Sept. 11, 2026. Nearly 7,100 U.S. military service members lost their lives fighting in the Global War on Terror. We will begin this series, titled “Their Sacrifice” by looking at one of them.

Sgt. Daniel Crabtree was killed  on June 8, 2006, when a roadside bomb exploded next to his vehicle during a combat patrol near Al Kut in Iraq.. Today his daughter Mallory has made it her mission to speak publicly about the sacrifices that her father and so many other service men and women laid upon the altar of freedom. Look for details next week.

Forbes magazine has been sounding alarms recently about cuts to Social Security. A reduction of about 21% in benefits paid to everyone could happen as soon as October 2032, or just 85 months from now. “Nothing beautiful about 21% cuts to Social Security” read a headline in the magazine on June 1. “Social Security and Medicare cuts are coming because the bond market will eventually bring Congress to its knees…” reads a headline from August 31.

In Ohio, 21% of all residents are age 65 or older and will be directly impacted if Social Security is forced to reduce benefits. Eyeoncleveland.com is increasingly worried about the federal government’s inability to right the ship of state. Drastic action is needed. Watch for another story on this important subject soon.

Noah Weisblat was a student in one of my Summer 2025 courses at Cuyahoga Community College. He is monitoring and reporting on developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI), and is producing a regular weekly newsletter on this burgeoning subject. I was privileged to take some time and answer questions from Noah about AI and the college classroom. Eyeoncleveland.com is now averaging 10,000 + views per year. Some of our most popular stories have been about Cuyahoga Community College athletics, and also features on the accomplishments and life of a person near and dear to my heart, Cleveland’s Olympic great Jesse Owens.

Friends have asked me, “John, when you retire from Cuyahoga Community College, will eyeoncleveland.com continue?” YES. There will be more details on this as the fall progresses.
